  • Q.  How can we evidence that our staffing levels are sufficient when 25% of our staff are off sick or isolating at any one time due to coronavirus?

    Q.  How can we evidence that our staffing levels are sufficient when 25% of our staff are off sick or isolating at any one time due to coronavirus?

    A.  There is little helpful CQC guidance on staffing levels. The guidance that does exist (dated 19 March 2020) relates to CQC's response to serious injury or specific incidents while staff levels are likely to be low. This is an acceptance that staffing levels could fall below the desired number due to coronavirus. The CQC guidance says that, in relation to serious injury notifications, it will make a judgement according to its current guidance on the type of incident you're reporting. They will make judgements about what counts as avoidable harm or a provider failure in a proportionate manner. It goes on to say that it will consider the pressures on providers and staffing levels, and whether you are taking sufficient action to ensure your care is safe and effective.
