Q&A
-
Q. One of the people we support is sometimes aggressive towards our staff. We have provided our staff with e-learning training in managing challenging behaviour, but this has not improved the situation. What else can we do?
A. Providers of services for people who may be at risk of developing behaviours that challenge must have strategies in place to support those people. These strategies are called positive behaviour support (PBS). All too often the strategies in place are designed to manage the behaviour and this reactive approach is rarely effective in the long term. PBS is a proactive approach which helps to understand the reason for the behaviour so we can better meet people’s needs, enhance their quality of life and reduce the likelihood that the behaviour will happen.

Q. When there is a vaccine for COVID-19, can we insist that all our staff and the people we support are vaccinated?
A. The Coronavirus Act 2020 introduced several powers, but mandatory medical treatment and vaccination remain explicitly prohibited in public health legislation across the UK. There is, however, potential for abuse leading to infringement of civil liberties and human rights unless the powers contained in the Coronavirus Act and other public health legislation are exercised lawfully.
-
Q. One of the people we support had an unwitnessed fall the other day, but were fortunately unharmed. What are the key actions we should take in response to this incident?
A. The first thing to establish is whether the person actually fell. It may be that they put themselves on the floor, but it is equally possible that they were knocked to the floor.
-
Q. We have been told that every person we support should have their own sling to be used when moving and positioning. Is this correct?
A. Good practice requires that all slings should be provided for single person use to assist with managing infection control, regardless of the type selected for use.
-
Q: We are concerned that our risk assessments are not as detialed as they could be. What can we do to address this?
A. Risk assessments are one of the areas that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will focus on in an inspection of a service.
