Q&A
-
Q. We run a home care agency. One of the people we support has dementia and refuses to take their medication. Their family have instructed us to hide the medication in strawberry yogurt, and they say that the GP has agreed that our staff can do this.
... Are we allowed to do this?
A. The situation you describe is called covert administration. Covert administration is when medicines are administered in a disguised format. Medicines can be hidden in food, drink or given through a feeding tube without the knowledge or consent of the person receiving them. This means the person does not know they are taking a medicine.
